MIP holds training for young researchers from Serbia

On 19 June 2024, the Mechanism Information Programme for Affected Communities (MIP) held a lecture and workshop for a group of young researchers working on the project "Serbia in War." The training for the researchers and the subsequent research was organised by the Youth Initiative for Human Rights, Serbia (YIHR).

During the lecture, MIP researcher Nemanja Stjepanović presented cases involving political, military, and police officials from Serbia that were heard before the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) and the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (Mechanism). He also familiarised the attendees with a selection of the archival material that resulted from those trials.

In the workshop, the participants learned how to use research tools to search the ICTY/Mechanism archival material. Mr. Stjepanović demonstrated how to find information in the judgments and, subsequently, how to locate supporting evidence and transcripts of testimonies through the Mechanism’s Unified Court Records.

Today’s lecture and training form part of MIP’s efforts to support projects and events implemented by civil society organisations active in the field of transitional justice in the region of the former Yugoslavia.

The aim of the MIP is to improve the knowledge and understanding of citizens and communities in the countries of the former Yugoslavia about the crimes committed during the conflicts of the 1990s, based on the jurisprudence of the ICTY and the Mechanism. The MIP is funded by the European Union.
