Judge Jean-Claude Antonetti has been a Judge of the Mechanism since it commenced operations in July 2012. In this capacity, he has adjudicated a variety of matters as a Single Judge and as a member of the Appeals Chamber.

From 2003 to 2016, Judge Antonetti served as a permanent Judge of the ICTY. As Presiding Judge of Trial Chamber III of the ICTY, he presided over the Hadžihasanović & Kubura, Prlić et al., and Šešelj cases. Separately, Judge Antonetti was assigned to the bench of the Appeals Chamber in the Tolimir case.

Earlier in his career, Judge Antonetti served in various capacities within the French Ministry of Justice, including as Chef de Cabinet of the Director of Prison Administration (1979-1981). Judge Antonetti became a Prosecutor in Senlis (1987-1991) and, subsequently, Vice President of the Tribunal de Grande Instance de Paris (1991-1995; 1997-1998). He also served as Justice Advisor to the French Prime Minister (1995-1997) and to the French President (1998-2002), before being appointed as Presiding Judge of the Paris Court of Appeal (2002). In addition, Judge Antonetti was a member of the French National Consultative Commission on Human Rights (2000-2002).

Judge Antonetti holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Paris 1, France (1973) and a master’s degree from the same University (1974). He also studied at the École nationale de la magistrature (1975-1977) and the Institut des hautes études de Défense nationale (1984-1985). In addition to his native French, he speaks English.
