Judge René José Andriatianarivelo has been a Judge of the Mechanism since February 2024. In this capacity, he has been involved in a variety of matters, including as a Single Judge.

Prior to his appointment as a Mechanism Judge, Judge Andriatianarivelo served in different judicial and prosecutorial capacities in his home country of Madagascar for over 35 years. Most recently, he was Chief Prosecutor of the Supreme Court and Representative of the Prosecution Service before the High Court of Justice of Madagascar (2018-2022). Before that, he served as Chief Prosecutor of the Appeals Division of the Anti-Corruption Unit of the Prosecution Service in Antananarivo (2018), as Advocate General at the Court of Cassation in the Supreme Court of Madagascar (2012-2018), and as Chief Prosecutor at the Court of Appeal of Toamasina (2009-2012). Earlier in his career, he worked as a Prosecutor in numerous courts in Madagascar (1997-2003, 2004-2009) and as a Judge and Examining Judge (1986-1997, 2003-2004), including as President of the Court of First Instance of Antsirabe.

During his career, Judge Andriatianarivelo has provided trainings to legal officers, police officers, lawyers and civil society organisations on a variety of issues relevant for their work. At the moment, he is appointed as a trainer at the National College of the Judiciary and Court Officers of Madagascar.

Judge Andriatianarivelo holds a master’s degree in private law from the University of Antananarivo, Madagascar (1983). He also graduated from the Institute of Judicial Studies at the same University (1985). He is fluent in French, English, and Malagasy.
