The International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (Mechanism) has recently provided the Sarajevo Information Centre on the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (Centre) with certified copies of all publically available judgements issued by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) and the Mechanism. These copies were provided in both English and Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian. The Centre was further provided with a selection of books and publications relating to the conflicts in the former Yugoslavia and to international criminal and humanitarian law, as well as a collection of public information material previously produced by the ICTY’s Outreach Programme.

With respect to certain media reports in the region of the former Yugoslavia, the Mechanism clarifies that, in accordance with Security Council resolution 1966 (2010), only certified public copies of the judgements were provided to the Centre. The original versions of the judgements of the ICTY and the Mechanism, as well as of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, form part of the archives managed by the Mechanism and remain the property of the United Nations.

By providing these certified copies of judgements and additional materials, the Mechanism continues to demonstrate its support for the Centre as it develops its programme and other activities. The Mechanism will also continue to cooperate with other countries in the region of the former Yugoslavia to facilitate the establishment of information centres in those countries.

The Centre was established in May 2018 by the City of Sarajevo, with the support of the Mechanism, and is the first such information centre to be opened in the region of the former Yugoslavia. The Centre is located in the Sarajevo City Hall and, as part of its activities in promoting the ICTY’s legacy, provides direct and guided access to the public judicial records of the ICTY and the Mechanism.
