Mechanism Prosecutor on Mission to Kigali

Mechanism Prosecutor Serge Brammertz is on an official visit to Kigali from 20 to 25 March 2023. 

The Prosecutor is scheduled to meet with key Government officials, including Rwanda’s Minister of Justice Dr. Emmanuel Ugirashebuja; Minister of Defense Major General Albert Murasira; Minister of National Unity and Civic Engagement Dr Jean-Damascène Bizimana; Prosecutor General Mr Aimable Havugiyaremye; and Inspector General of Police, Deputy Commissioner General Felix Namuhoranye.

Fourth cycle of the Mechanism’s Inter-University Video Lecture Programme concludes

The fourth cycle of the Mechanism's Inter-University Video Lecture Programme (Programme) concluded today with a lecture by representatives of the Mechanism's Witness Support and Protection Unit (WISP) from The Hague. The WISP representatives spoke about the types of support and assistance provided to victims and witnesses appearing before the ICTY and the Mechanism.

Mechanism holds ceremony to handover the United Nations Detention Facility to the Government of Tanzania

The Registrar of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (IRMCT or Mechanism), Abubacarr M. Tambadou, today officiated over a handover ceremony marking the closure of the United Nations Detention Facility (UNDF) and return of the grounds to the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania. The Registrar was joined by high-level officials from the Government of Tanzania, senior Mechanism officials and longtime stakeholders such as the International Committee of the Red Cross.

The Appeals Chamber of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (Mechanism), composed of Judge Graciela Gatti Santana, presiding, Judge Lee G. Muthoga, Judge Aminatta Lois Runeni N’gum, Judge Yusuf Aksar, and Judge Claudia Hoefer, heard yesterday and today oral arguments in the appeals filed by Mr. Jovica Stanišić, Mr. Franko Simatović, and the Prosecution against the judgement pronounced on 30 June 2021, and filed in writing on 6 August 2021, by the Trial Chamber of the Mechanism.

Registrar Abubacarr M. Tambadou opens the second semester of the Mechanism’s Inter-University Video Lecture Programme

The Registrar of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (Mechanism), Abubacarr M. Tambadou, today opened the second semester of the fourth cycle of the Inter-University Video Lecture Programme (Programme), “International Law and Facts Established before the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY)”, with a lecture on the role and functions of the Mechanism for law students from across the countries of the former Yugoslavia.

Paying respects to Judge Elizabeth Ibanda-Nahamya

The Mechanism is mourning the loss of Judge Elizabeth Ibanda-Nahamya of Uganda who died in the Netherlands on 5 January 2023.

At the request of the family, Judge Ibanda-Nahamya’s coffin will be placed on view at the Mechanism’s Hague branch on Thursday, 12 January 2023 between 11a.m. and 2p.m. 

The funeral for Judge Ibanda-Nahamya will be held at a later stage in her home country of Uganda.
