The Mechanism and the ICTY commemorate 70 years of the United Nations

This week, the Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals (Mechanism) and the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) will join the UN in celebrating 70 years since the entry into force of the UN Charter on 24 October 1945. As members of the UN system, the ICTY and the Mechanism have been at the forefront of the UN’s efforts in support of international justice and accountability for violations of international law.

The Registrar of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) and the Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals (Mechanism), Mr. John Hocking, delivered on Tuesday the closing address of the 2015 International Council on Archives (ICA) Conference, held on 28 and 29 September 2015 in Reykjavik, Iceland.

On International Justice Day, we mark the anniversary of the adoption of the Rome Statute, the founding treaty of the International Criminal Court: the world’s first permanent international criminal tribunal.

In doing so, we pay tribute to the vision and commitment of all those individuals who have advocated, and continue to advocate, for justice to be more than an abstract ideal, for national and international courts to bring to trial those alleged to be responsible for serious violations of international law, and for States to protect their citizens.

The Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals (MICT) unveiled the cornerstone for its new premises in Arusha yesterday at a ceremony officiated by H.E. President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete of the United Republic of Tanzania. Transfer of all closed cases’ records from the ICTY to the MICT is finalised

Today marks the completion of a comprehensive transfer of physical judicial records in all closed cases of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) into the custody of the Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals (MICT). The materials transferred include exhibits, filings, transcripts and audio-visual tapes of judicial proceedings.

Jallow, Prosecutor of the Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals (MICT), attended and gave a keynote speech at the international conference on the research process, documentation and prosecution of genocide in Bosnia and Herzegovina held in Sarajevo on 11 and 12 June 2015 and jointly organised by the Association of Victims and Witnesses of Genocide and the Mother’s Action of the Srebrenica Zepa Enclave.

The Mechanism endorses the Universal Declaration on Archives on International Archives Day

Joining the worldwide events marking this year’s International Archives Day, the Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals (Mechanism) has subscribed today to the UNESCO Universal Declaration on Archives (Declaration), becoming the first United Nations institution to sign this Declaration at the management level.
