Ntakirutimana, Gérard (MICT-12-17-R)

Review

Gérard Ntakirutimana was convicted by Trial Chamber I of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) on 21 February 2003, for his role in the 1994 genocide and sentenced to 25 years of imprisonment. His sentence was affirmed on appeal on 13 December 2004.

On 21 May 2024, the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (Mechanism) partially granted Ntakirutimana's request for review of his convictions, based on a new fact concerning Prosecution Witness HH's recantation of his testimony.

The Review Hearing, scheduled from 18 to 22 November 2024, at the Mechanism's branch in Arusha, Tanzania, will examine whether this new fact could affect Ntakirutimana's convictions related to an attack that occurred at Gitwe Hill, near Gitwe Primary School, in early April or late May 1994.
