The United Nations Secretary-General has appointed Judge Theodor Meron to a new term as President of the Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals (MICT), effective 1 March 2016. President Meron’s new term will continue until 30 June 2018, subject to his reappointment as a Judge of the Mechanism.

In expressing his intention to appoint President Meron to a new term, the United Nations Secretary-General acknowledged President Meron’s “astute stewardship” of the Mechanism and his leading role in ensuring that the Mechanism is small and efficient, as envisaged by the United Nations Security Council.

President Meron stated that it had been a great privilege to serve as the Mechanism’s President for the last four years and that he was deeply honoured by the trust in his leadership demonstrated by the appointment to a new term. “I shall continue to do my utmost to make certain that the Mechanism remains true to its promise as a more efficient and economical model of an international criminal tribunal while upholding its abiding commitment to due process and fair trials”, he added.

Since his election as a Judge of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) by the United Nations General Assembly in March 2001, President Meron has served on the Appeals Chambers of both the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and the ICTY. He has also served a total of four terms as President of the ICTY.
