Mechanism Information Programme representative participates in a workshop ‘Transitional Justice through Montenegrin and regional experience’

The Coordinator of the Mechanism Information Programme for Affected Communities (MIP), Rada Pejić-Sremac, spoke today at a workshop entitled Transitional Justice through Montenegrin and Regional Experience, which was organized by the Montenegrin Centre for Civic Education.

The online workshop gathered together legal experts, young professionals in the Montenegrin judiciary, civil society representatives, and law students from the University of Montenegro, Mediterranean University, and University of Donja Gorica.

During her remarks, Ms. Pejić-Sremac stressed the importance of the legacy of the ICTY for the region of the former Yugoslavia and explained that the Mechanism, as the successor to the ICTY, is responsible for safeguarding and preserving this legacy.

Ms. Pejić-Sremac further discussed the various activities of the MIP, noting that the aim of this programme is to contribute to the processes of transitional justice and strengthening the rule of law in the Western Balkans region. She explained that the MIP uses the archives of the ICTY and Mechanism, as well as their overall legacies, to present fact-based accounts of crimes committed during the conflicts of the 1990s.

Ms. Pejić-Sremac concluded her remarks by emphasizing that the work of civil society actors in the region of the former Yugoslavia is fundamental to the processes of transitional justice and that civil society organizations are important partners for the MIP.
