MIP holds lecture on ICTY's legacy and achievements for Montenegrin students

On 27 October 2023, the Mechanism Information Programme for Affected Communities (MIP) held an online lecture for 20 high school and university students from Montenegro on the work and legacy of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) and the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (Mechanism). The lecture entitled “30 years since the establishment of the ICTY” was held as part of the School of Transitional Justice organised by the Youth Initiative for Human Rights from Montenegro.

During the lecture, MIP Researcher Mr. Nemanja Stjepanović spoke about the establishment, work, and most significant achievements of the ICTY and the Mechanism. He provided an overview of cases adjudicated by both institutions, including those related to crimes perpetrated during the shelling of Dubrovnik in late 1991, and highlightetheir pivotal role in ensuring that those responsible for the grave atrocities committed during the conflicts in the former Yugoslavia faced justice in The Hague.

Mr. Stjepanović also underscored the enduring significance of the two tribunals' legacies and suggested possible ways to use the archival materials amassed during legal proceedings.

The MIP’s participation in the School of Transitional Justice 2023 forms part of the Programme’s efforts to support projects and events organised by civil society organisations active in the field of transitional justice in the region of the former Yugoslavia.

The aim of the MIP is to improve the knowledge and understanding of citizens and communities in the countries of the former Yugoslavia about the crimes committed during the conflicts of the 1990s, based on the jurisprudence of the ICTY and the Mechanism. The MIP is funded by the European Union
