MIP holds lecture for Montenegrin law students

On 26 October 2023, the Mechanism Information Programme for Affected Communities (MIP) organised a lecture for students from the Law Faculty at the University of Podgorica, Montenegro.

The lecture was delivered by Ms. Anisa Sućeska, the MIP’s Youth Outreach Coordinator, who presented an overview of the historical records and archives of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) and the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (Mechanism). This lecture enabled the students to familiarise themselves with the archival resources and evidence that are accessible through the databases of both institutions. In addition, the students learned how to use the research tools available on these databases and to effectively conduct searches on the ICTY and Mechanism websites.

Ms. Sućeska also took the opportunity to introduce the MIP's Inter-University Video Lecture Programme, entitled “International Law and Facts Established Before the ICTY” (Programme). The University of Podgorica was among the initial six universities to actively participate in the Programme, which was launched in 2019 and has since been implemented every year. The fifth cycle of the Programme commenced on 2 November 2023 and will bring together more than 200 law and political science students from 15 different faculties across the region of the former Yugoslavia. The lecture series aims to initiate discussion and improve students’ knowledge of the region’s recent history, the role and contributions of the ICTY, and principles of international criminal law and international humanitarian law.

The purpose of the MIP is to improve the knowledge and understanding of citizens and communities in the countries of the former Yugoslavia about the crimes committed during the conflicts of the 1990s, based on the jurisprudence of the ICTY and the Mechanism. The MIP is funded by the European Union.
